Ghaziabad District was created on November 26, 1976 when then Chief Minister Mr. N.D. Tiwari declared the place as a district on the birth anniversary of the first prime minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nery. Prior to that, the district was a tehsil of Meeru district. A tehsil is an administrative division of some countries in South Asia. Specifically, it’s a city or town that serves to exercise some fiscal and administrative powers over the municipalities or villages under its jurisdiction. Ghaziabad District’s history extends to long before that, however. Research work and excavations done in the area – specifically at the mound of Kaseri on the bank of river Hindon some 2 kilometers north of Mohan Nagar – shows that civilization has already been developed there as far back as 2500 BC.

The district is situated in the middle of the flat alluvial tract between the Ganges River and Yamuna River. When viewed from the air, the district is somewhat rectangular in shape, with a length of about 72 kilometers and a width of 37 kilometers. Ghaziabad district is bounded in the north by Meeru district, in the east by Jyotiba Phule Nagar district, in the west by Delhi, and in the south by Gautam Buddh Nagar and Bulandshahr district. There are three major rivers that flow through Ghaziabad district: the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the Hindon, and they are filled with water all throughout the year. The Ganaga Canal also flows through the district, catering the drinking water needs of those living in Ghaziabad, as well as Delhi. The total population of the district is about 3 million, distributed along a total area of 2,590 square kilometers.

Industry and agriculture are the major industries in the district of Ghaziabad. Among the important crops produced are sugar canes, cereals, pulses, and oil-seeds. On the industrial front, both private and public sectors have functioning industrial units, which include the manufacture of sugar, vegetable, alcohol, textile, and agricultural implements. Cottage industries are also present in the form of silk and handloom weaving.

As the district is connected to Delhi, the national capital, the climate and rainfall are remarkably similar to it. Like the rest of northern India, there are three main seasons: summer, winter, and monsoon, the latter of which happens during the end of June to the beginning of July; and the rain usually doesn’t let up until October. However, due to the severe snowfalls in the Himalayas and Kumaon Hills region, the weather can sometimes become more erratic and unpredictable.

As for the manner of governance, the general administration of the district falls under the hands of the district officer, who acts as the representative of the State Government. He is in charge of the implementation of all government laws. The Collector, on the other hand, collects the land revenue and the other government dues as well as maintains the land records. Maintaining law and order is the main function of the District Magistrate, who is assisted by five additional magistrates, four S.D.M., two additional city magistrates, and a City Magistrate.

North of Ghaziabad is the district of Meerut and adjacent to Ghaziabad is the national capital Delhi. Leaving the city of Ghaziabad in the center surrounded by many other places. The city of Ghaziabad is around Ajrara, Bahadurgarh, Dasna, Dhaulana, Faridnagar, Hapur, Jalalabad, Loni, Modinagar, Mohan Nagar, and Murad Nagar.

The first five places that surround Ghaziabad Ajrara, Bahadurgarh, Dasna, Dhaulana, and Faridnagar are all very interesting and add to the intrigue as well as culture of Ghaziabad. The place of Ajrara was the seat of Hindu monarchy before Muslims making this village which lies on the left bank of the Kali Nadi somewhat historical. The place of Bahadurgarh was the original home of Khurja pottery and it is very well known for its tradition of handloom cloth. The place of Dasna has a railway station located on the Ghaziabad-Moradabad line of the railway station adjoining the village of Masuri. The place of Dhaulana has the temple of Sati Malindi Devi where a fair takes place regularly. The place of Faridnagar was founded by the Nawab Farid-un-din Khan in the historic reign of Akbar.

The places of Hapur, Jalalabad, Loni, Modinagar, Mohan Nagar, and Murad Nagar also are interesting places around the city of Ghaziabad. The place of Hapur is leading the grain jaggery market. Jalalabad which is a place that resides Just 15 kms from the city of Ghaziabad is rich in crops of wheat and sugar cane. The place of Loni carries on the traditions of rakshasa Lavanasur who once ruled there. The place of Modinagar has the temple built by Rani Bala Bai Sindhia which is historic of the Modinagar reign. The place of Mohan Nagar is a very equipped industrial village. The place of Murad Nagar has a history that dates back to over 400 years ago. All the places that are around the city of Ghaziabad are all quite interesting.

Located in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh, Ghaziabad is an industrial city that is well-connected by roads and railways. The city itself houses the headquarters of Ghiazabad district and was originally a part of the Meerut district after the country’s independence until it was finally separated and given its own district status due to some political intervention. Today, it is becoming more and more prosperous and progressive, as evidenced by the number of malls and multiplexes that have sprung up around the city, as well as the widening of roads and infrastructure. However, Ghiazabad has long been a prosperous city whose history dates back to as far as 2500 BC.

Much of modern Ghaziabad’s rich history has been uncovered by the extensive excavations and research done in the city’s district. An example of its richness is the village of “KOT”, which is most commonly associated with the emperor Samundra Gupta, famous for performing the Aswamedha Yagya, one of the most important royal rituals of the Vedic religion, after destroying the fort and the princes of the Kot Dynasty. Another piece of history is during 1313, when the place became a massive battleground when the Tammir attacked a fort that was standing in the middle of the city. The massacre that resulted from the attack has long since become famous in Ghaziabadi history. The fort was also where the Mughal King used to go for hunting and pleasure trips. A Baage Ranap serves as a memorial for that period.

The city itself that stands today wasn’t always known as Ghaziabad. In 1740, the vizier Ghazi-ud-din, who served as the minister of the Moghul Emperor Ahmadshah and Alamgir Ilnd, established the place and called it Ghaziuddinnagar after himself. He then proceeded to build a spacious structure and that consisted of 120 rooms of masonry with arches that point up. According to records, this city that the vizier established was constructed within the boundary of four giant doors named Dasna Gate, Sihani Gate, Delhi Gate, and Shahi gate. Today, only the gate of the structure, together with a few portions of the boundary wall and a massive pillar about 14 feet tall remains. As time passed, Shahi Gate was renamed Bazar Gate and, after India gained her independence, it was again renamed Jawahar Gate. The other three gates still retain their names until today. Vizier Gazi-ud-din’s mausoleum still stands in the city today, but is in a state of disrepair.

In 1857 to 1858, the city was the scene of fighting during the Indian Mutiny, when Indian soldiers in the Bengal Army that was under the British East India Company mutinied but soon turned into a widespread uprising against British rule in India. The Hindon River, in particular, was the site of several skirmishes between Indian troops and British soldiers in 1857 and today, the graves of the British soldiers and officers can still be seen. Ghaziabad’s place in Northern Indian history is assured by the birth of many freedom fighters who played a role in various revolutions all dedicated to the attainment of freedom for all who have lived – and are still living – there.
